Bummer. He was so close on the WR attempt.
ankle surgeries are pretty invasive, he'll never be the same again
too bad.
Leaving our distance running bias aside, this is actually the coolest guy in all of track and field, so...oh darn

Correct. To need to operate on ankle ligaments means they're downplaying the extent of the injury. That's a pretty big deal.

the ankle is a much more complicated joint than the knee as well, you are more likely to make a strong comeback from an ACL tear than from torn ankle ligaments.
the forces at play in the high jump are very very high, it will likely be at least 6 months before he can jump (regular jumping) but more likely 9 months before he can high jump off of that foot.
No bueno. I had my fingers crossed he'd get the record soon. He's still young and can hopefully get back into form.
Imagine the force on the takeoff step?

Any demands for pics, like with Bolt?
Here's the video. The injury happens at 4:40. He took lots of jumps and looks like he got greedy. No wonder he got hurt: https://youtu.be/h46Pu7nA9-E
How do ankle ligaments get torn from a jump like that, that you have to go to surgery???
It doesn’t even look like he twisted his ankle. Usually from jumping the danger is to the calf muscle but not to the ankle. I broke my ankle in a severe way when I was 17. Broken fibula, torn ligaments. I sprinted and took a sharp turn on a slippery floor and twistes my ankle and broken it. My calf was so swollen that it got to the same size as my thigh, we had to cut the trousers. Surgery, 6 weeks cast, 3 months physiotherapy. I can say after a year I could sprint again like nothing happened. Still have screws inside for 20 years now. Don’t feel them, and they don’t bother me. I have full range of motion, and in better shape than ever. So stop with that nonsense about how complicated ankle surgeries are. They aren’t complicated even though they might seem so. They are very common and simple surgeries. However, like I said-why does Barshim need a surgery in the ankle is beyond me. I think these athletes rather go straight to the knife than to try and rest and let it heal.
This guy is almost like a comic book superhero.

He may not need surgery but it might be the best option to get back to competition sooner.
Do you understand what 10x bodyweight means?
Were you a better jumper after your healing?
Do you not believe that Barshim has access to very high-level physicians?
Yes, ankle surgeries are common for many different reasons... but to just say "hey, I have no idea what happened, but I'm gonna call BS", is rather bold.

That was my first thought. I think he's done. Sad.
I guess we dont see Bondarenko jumping any longer for a similar reason? He was incredibly close on quite a few WR attempts.
Now both these guys are gone.
