The orthopedic and cardiac risks go up so much. If you can still race 5 and 10ks into your 60s, you should be thrilled with that. THRILLED. I have so many running friends who can no longer run at all because of various physical ailments (mainly arthritis), and almost to a man, they tell me to stay away from marathons at my age.
Just to add to the discussion about running marathons past 60 - I think a big part of what changes is simply how long you're out there. It's one thing when you're still running sub 3 hours, but when you start taking 3.5, 4 hours or more, well, that's a LONG time to be out running, especially when you're 60+. When you're out there running for that long, it becomes as much a test of joints and tendons as it does speed and conditioning.
