I was just surprised that women would find it attractive for a guy to work a side job to buy them a shiny rock. I thought that was considered beta male. Or maybe feeling "so loved" isn't the same as feeling attracted at a primal level.

Maybe for a hookup in the club, but this is a pretty different situation: presumably she already liked the guy.
Still some warning signs if this was a big deal for her, but just as likely it was just him wanting to do something special and perhaps (imo) not getting it quite right.
Plus, it's a good sign for their relationship that he was able to secretly work a side job for several months without her thinking he was cheating.
BTW, was I the only one who thought her limping through the last lap of a heat with a torn ligament was both unnecessary and hard to watch?
