STFU! He chooses to put on a uniform and fight for your right to open your liberal mouth.
The military stifles people's rights. You must live in a different planet.
Unless he is just tired of running, it wouldn't be surprising to see Chelanga training with the Army distance crew in a few months.
stifles people’s rights?
please explain
He had a good run so to speak. I always wondered if he was too softened by American way of training.

Why would Sam quit professional running to suddenly join the army? Doesn’t make much sense to me as he is one of the top US runners and has a good chance at Olympic qualification in 2020.
Is he a full US citizen? I know he lost his sponsorship with Nike, could this be something to make money as he might not have enough?
Just seems odd that someone would want to leave pro running to join the military.
The words of a child.
Jonathan Gault talked to Chelanga this afternoon.

No, he will run with the US ARMY. Make 30 G a year to train / run full time
Sounds like a money thing

Please don't feed this turd. As much as it shocks me to hear people speak this way about the others in our military that work and fight not to defend not just his rights, but his very life, its best to just walk away. There is no reasoning with someone like this. Just let it go, and you'll be a much happier person.
wcap? That'd be a steady salary not so tied to performances as a pro running contract, esp with a company like nike (isn't that who sponsored chelanga?). In addition, Chelanga would get some pretty good training partners, coaching, and benefits. Its likely a better deal than what most pros are getting.
As an Army Veteran and former runner I resent that comment from you.
You obviously don't know or understand the US Army.
Why don't you join up and find out about the Army life and experience.
You will "earn" your pay.
- If "sbeefyk2" is assuming that Chelanga moves into WCAP then he is absolutely correct.
- Given that you are both a veteran and a former runner, I would feel the same way about the WCAP scam. Albeit in Chelanga's case, a naturalized citizen joining WCAP seeking an Army commission, this is noble versus the atypical Chelimo-like WCAP athlete .... notice I did not say soldier.
- YOU HEARD I HEAR FIRST! I'm confident we haven't seen the last of Sam Chelanga.
Seems like running was more of a means to an end for him based on the Gault article. Seems like a bunch of young women that go run at Stanford. Running gets them into the school, then they quit after a year or so.

You didn't read the article.
He has a family to support, he wants to give back to the US and the reality of being a paid pro you cannot make enough to survive and at the end of your career you have to be prepared to jump back into society and work!
His dreams and ambitions are real and bigger than most, the Army for him is the best pathway.
- He'll be there in 2020 wearing the WCAP jersey at the OTs.
- Hopefully he won't hang out w/Chelimo.

I think you don't understand what Sam is saying.
He needs to focus on his future.
He is 33 with two children.
Boot camp and officer training school will eat up a year, making him 34.
He did say he is retiring from professional running, not transferring to the Army running team.
If you have evidence beyond his own personal statements , please provide your factual details vs romantic assumptions.
Article says he really is going to basic training at Ft Jackson. People were amazed at a sub 12 two mile in basic training, their minds will be blown when he runs 8:30 or something.
I write this a a US citizen born in Colorado to American parents, a current runner, and have a very long family history of US Army service that Sam Chelanga's efforts are much more noble than Paul Chelimo's efforts. In fact, in my mind, they are not even on the same planet within the same solar system, so "to speak".

- You have no idea how old Chelanga really is ...
- WCAP will find him or vice versa .... particularly when he discovers what it's like to NOT run for a living.
- I don't assume any romance with anyone ..
