I hear that hobby joggers are moving in to triathlon because a 7:45 pace is considered fast for a 5k after a short swim and bike.

I need to add another truth.
Fat chicks on spin cycles at the gym wearing $300 pro road shoes despite the fact they could lose 80 pounds making me ill because of the way they oscillate and that they're wearing more in shoes than I spend on mine and I'm a cyclist.

I heard what sounded like a mobile cocktail party coming down the street in my neighborhood. It was a group of about 20 cyclists riding bikes that probably had an average cost of $3,800.00 all in. .
Wow, so in the few seconds you observed them, you rapidly noted the types of bikes and the wheels and components on those bikes, noted their clothing brands and helmets, and any additional accessories, assigned a dollar amount to each of those, and then calculated the price of the entire ensemble? Times 20 people?! And then divided it all by that same 20 to reach the average cost?
Are you a savant or something? Surely some sort of financial guru. You must be worth billions with those skills!

I live and work in South Korea. Cycling seems to have replaced jogging/running here too. A lot of walkers and a lot of cyclists, but not as many runners it seems. Running boom here too but it seems like cycling is the new thing.
Hiking, dude. Hiking.
There's so much fail in this thread.
It's hilarious how much you guys discuss about cycling. Clearly running is too boring.
I will be riding 21 miles today with the mayor of ft worth at 6:00 . All are welcome to join.

And another thing you stupid butt head fantasy pro riders is quit sneaking up on runners and when you're 3 feet away scare the crap out of the runner by yelling "passing on your left" but most of the time you really don't pass on the left, you like to blow by the runner 3 inches away yea FU you pieces of garbage fantasy pro rider wanna beez!
Take your your earphones and get out of the middle of the path, Popeye.

The bike chain makes a sound, which you should be able to hear if you aren't 84 years old.
I ride by bicycle on non running days - my last ride was a very leisure 20 1/2 mile ride - I ride very slow, BUT I don't dress up in fake pro rider garb pretending to be a fast rider. I'll be the 1st to admit I suck as a cyclist. The real cyclists of the world are pretty darn awesome - those guys I look up to, not these fake "stolen valor" riders. And when I do ride on bike paths, if I do pass a runner I'll sound the bell at least 150 feet away and take the absolute widest path around the runner. But many times if the runner is doing a good clip I'll just let them stay ahead so to give them confidence. I'm usually not in a hurry on bike days, just want to get outside and shake out the legs some - those are EZ days - no Lance Armstrong fantasy crap - just regular gym sweats, knee pads, long sleeve shirt, and helmet. Very bland because that's who I am as a cyclist. It's a tank of a Schwinn mountain bike with knobbies - not meant to blaze the trail.
I almost called myself Popeye so thank you for reminding me - the reason I did not go with Popeye is I wasn't sure if I'd break any copyright crap since it's a cartoon and a John Goodman? movie. But thank you
I'm not 84 - my dad isn't 84 either -
For some, cycling is more attractive than running.
Cycling is easy. As the one of the most efficient forms of travel on earth, its easier than walking.
The equipment/technology factor can be big for cyclists. You can brag about/show off your new pedals, seat, wheels, etc.
People with disposable income (many in USA) can afford a bike and there are lots of improved surfaces (roads, paths, trails) to ride it on. Contrast with Kenya or other countries, where cost of a basic bike is too much and there are few places to ride it.
But running is more "fun? if you like to challenge yourself to improve fitness/keep in shape (more intense workout in less time and easier to measure improvement).
You can run anywhere and with little equipment/gear.
Running is more social (hard and dangerous to ride side by side and talk).
Also, participation in huge running races far exceeds participation in cycling events.

How do you show off your pedals?

That's because huge running races are actually huge participation events.
You can't just jump in a bike race like you can a running "race". You have to have a license for one and a helluva lot of fitness and skill secondly, lest you be dropped in the first two minutes and not even finish.
Again, not like a participatory fun run.
Been seeing far fewer runners, and 80% of those I do see are women. On the other hand, endless packs of geriatric old farts on mountain bikes have appeared out of nowhere.
Listen people, I didn't just wake up one day and decide most cyclists suck and are rude crap garbage people - events occurred to come up with this opinion over a decade - the worst event I witnessed I was in a 5K run and there was this lady runner who was a decent runner about 100 yards ahead of me - this piece of crap garbage male cyclist in fake professional biking clothes was blowing by all us runners yelling "Biker Biker Biker" and this MFer hit this lady runner at perhaps 20/22 MPH and she BROKE her ankle - several runners stopped and carried her back to the start area and got an ambulance to take her to the hospital - now the big $1000 question: did this piece of crap cyclist stop and render aid? NO HE DID NOT - he took off but we called the Police to have his ass arrested - for some reason with many cyclists a disease takes over - they think they own the trail and everyone needs get out of the way so they can show the world they can crank it up to 24MPH. Newsflash for you dumb ass mid 20 mph guys - let's put you in the Tour De France and see how long you can keep up with real elites - you won't last 10 minutes before your sorry butt's dropped - you pieces of garbage
So much anger I sense in this one....he is not to be trained
I thought of this thread on my bike ride today. I was just sort of farting around on my mountain bike on the levee next to an irrigation canal when I noticed that I was catching a couple of cyclists on expensive looking road bikes on the road next to me. I was on mostly dirt and gravel. As I passed them, I could tell that they sped up to try and keep pace but that only lasted for a minute or so.
I'm 47 and pretty out of shape, so.....yeah cycling ain't what it used to be, hammer time all the time.

Check out my awesome new pedals. They transmit power data to my watch, bike computer, and phone via ANT+ and BLE. They tell me how smooth my pedal stroke is and how my left and right legs differ. And they were a bargain at just under $1k.
Cycling is a sport for lazy people. It’s not that far from driving a car. It’s all done sitting, mainly just the quads are working, downhill you just work on the brakes. You can actually ride for 2 hours with really doing anything.
Still running the Back Bay in Newport Beach. See runners, bicyclers pickups and motorcycles.
