The only place west of Victoria is South West at least as an "all the way west" point that is accessible by road and that is Sooke area. The run to the ferry is not one hour from Victoria, it is 30K, so at this pace +/- three hours. From Sooke, he would more than double the distance to the ferry. If he wanted to be REALLY REALLY west, he could go to Port Renfrew, another 50K or so. He wanted to get off the ferry in Tswassen, so he had some day in front of him, to get towards the Trans Canada HWY or a road parallel to it.
Mile 0 landmark is in Victoria. Mile 0 landmark has a statue of Terry Fox, who he is openly channeling on this run. The guy who took over Fox's run (he who must not be named) dipped his artificial leg in off the beach at Mile 0. Sheldon Kennedy who rollerbladed across Canada for sexual abuse victims, jumped into the water at Mile 0 to demonstrate the end, symbolically. Al Howie set the not-certified course record from Victoria - it's the record that Dave is going after.
Port Hardy is 500K north of Victoria and 370K from Nanaimo, where there is a ferry that can go to Vancouver, so that he can get on the Trans Canada Hwy.
Prince Rupert is another700K north on the mainland. To start there would mean he would have to run 718K from Prince Rupert to Prince George before running 521K south to get to Kamloops. Victoria to Kamloops was under 400K by itself and IS ON THE RECORD RUN ROUTE.
