LetsRun.com Editorial Calling For Convicted Drug Cheat Steve Mullings To Be Pulled From 2005 NCAA Meet 6/2/2005 9:50PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
We urge you to read the following:
http://www.letsrun.com/2005/mullings.php

If you are as outraged as us, you can sign an on-line petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/letsrun/petition.html) at the end and contact Miss. St. to let them know you think they are doing the wrong thing by entering a man who was convicted of a drug conviction last week compete in next week's NCAA Meet.

We have tried to contact Miss. St. numerous times on this matter but they refuse to respond.

Mr. Johnson: Mississippi will do whatever it can to have a good track team, under the rules it's governed by, just because it CAN get away with it, under the rules. Those rules are the NCAA rules.

It's the NCAA that's letting Mississippi do this by not recognizing drug tests conducted by a legitimate athletics organization. I think that in addition to the deserved bad press (not that you're running a smear campaign -- it's just that the truth is bad press for Mississippi) you're giving Mississippi, the NCAA needs to be criticized and held publicly accountable.

If the drug use was severe enough to take away the guy's Olympic eligibility -- if the Jamaicans didn't want to be represented by such a man in the Olympics, despite the glory he might have brought them -- then why is it allowable for him to participate in the NCAA?

A cynic would say, "there goes rojo and wejo at it again. Two upper-crust, silver spoon boys trying to deny others the right to college education and athletics. This is just like the Louie Luchini crap."

However, not I. Great job, Robert and Weldon. SOMEBODY has to speak up some time. Just because you can get away with something (Miss. St. under NCAA's idiotic policy) doesn't mean it is right or the best option. Hopefully, this will shame them into doing the right thing as public relations is a bitch. Any other Miss. St. athletes want to speak up?

Use your power and voice for good, not evil.

I was just wondering why now? Maybe the circumstances were different (anyone can correct me here) but didn't Carl Myerscough compete for Nebraska after testing positive elsewhere?

We almost talked about that in the editorial. I'm fairly certain that Nebraska voluntarily pulled Carl from competion while under his IAAF ban. IF my memory serves me correctly, his ban ended on day 1 of the Big 12 indoor meet. He didn't compete on Day 1 but then competed on Day 2.

So he competed after his ban was up but not during. That is what i think happened.

As for the NCAA, i also have heard that starting next year the NCAA will be recognizing IAAF bans but this hasn't been confirmed. We tried calling someone there but perhaps we have the wrong person. I just read an article that talks aobut situation like these so we can try the NCAA again on Friday (http://www.ncaa.org/news/2000/20001023/active/3722n20.html).

I also want to think whoever linked to the article on Steve, http://archive.mstateathletics.com/0,5604,1_34_0_67201,00.html. If we had written more, we would have mentioned how Miss. St doesn't even mention the suspension in any of its press releases or media guide. How can that not be mentioned? They just ignore it and act like the drug test didn't occur.

I also think their coach is doing Steve a disfavor by not talking. There "side" of the story needs to be heard - that is if they have one.

Here is a list of emails to copy and paste when you send your letter's. It includes all AD's and media relations as well as the track coaches and the Head Strength Coach.

Someone should compile a list of the coach's and after they send a letter letting all the coach's know what their track and field programis up to. I am sure a lot of the smaller teams would be outraged.

I think we have a duty to make serious effort here folks.

Take action,

"We also left a message with Athletic Director Wendel McRaven, who was at some SEC meetings, but it wasn't returned either."

I didn't know Wendel McRaven was the athletic director at MSU...

that's because he's the head coach at Kent State!

Get your story right.

That was a mistake that appeared in the first version of the editorial whihc we quickly corrected. The MIss. St AD is Larry Templeton and the one we called.

I called Kent. State's coach as orginally it looked like there sprinter would be the guy left out of nationals becuase of Mullings participation.

That no longer is the case so we left that part out but somehow the wrong name showed up. My mistake.

If one wants to get this story out in the open and get more pressure on Miss. State officials to talk about it, contact the local papers that cover Mississippi State. I don't think Starke-Vegas has a local paper, but the Daily Journal in Tupelo and Clarion Ledger cover Miss. State...maybe some other area papers as well.

Rojo before you go running your mouth maybe you should take some time to get all the facts straight. Spell check would also help your cause. You might have a legit point about this dude running in NCAA, but you sound like a completely unintelligent prick with all the spelling and factual errors that you're making on this board. Whatever happened with the last petition you started? That did a lot of good, didn't it.
