Letsrun sleuths, you have proven yourself amazingly good over the years of separating fact from fiction over the years. Can you tell me if this story is legit? How does one dislocate their shoulder while running?

According to the BBC presenter, Southgate claimed that he was going for his 10K pb.... in the woods. Not sure if he (the presenter or Southgate) was joking.

Maybe someone threw a pillowcase full of ruples out of a car window which totally coincidentally struck him in the shoulder?
I've done it Rojo. 1976 easy run through the woods the week of XC nationals. Caught my toe on a root, went down face forward, and rolled over with my left arm wedged behind me. Shoulder popped out. Stunned, and sitting on the ground with my shoulder visibly sticking out, trying to regain my composure, my teammates watched as I yanked my shoulder back in place, years before Mel Gibson did it on film. Then sat a bit, before "getting back in the game." The run back wasn't too bad, but as soon as I stopped it started to throb -- really throb. Like Tell-Tale heart throbbing.
What Mel Gibson did in the movies is fake. In real life this sh!te really hurts, and it feels worse at night. You can't sleep on either side, and end up laying on your back trying to cushion it with bunched up sheets and blankets. It throbbed all night.
Hey Rojo back off okay? He has the weight of our nation on his shoulders as well a dislocation. He doesn't need any kind of conspiracy as to how he's hurt himself. Did you see the Tunisia game? I'd be hurting myself too if I was responsible for that near catastrophe.
I'm surprised more countries haven't developed a mysterious flu while in Russia. Putin is obviously trying to be more subtle with the Polonium.
Classic mistake of far too excessive arm motion. I blame carl Lewis.
He probably tripped and fell on his hands. I slightly dislocated my shoulder that way once.
didn't read the article, but definitely can happen, especially if someone has a history of dislocations. all it takes is a fall on an outstretched arm
I would consider that from falling, not running.
Herschel Walker, American football player, dislocated his shoulder early in a college football game, trainer popped it back in, and he finished the game with over 30 carries and over 100 yards.

Nothing fishy, he fell. It says so in the article where it says he took a "tumble".
Funny part is that I was sitting in a bar with a soccer coach who is English. The crawl on ESPN said something like ENG: Odd Injury. The guy was on his phone so fast to see what had happened that I thought he was going to hurt himself.
Malmo is right. My wife has dislocated her shoulder about a dozen times and recently had major surgery to make sure it didn't happen again. Every time it was more severe.
First time was a fall during a HS XC run. It popped back in on its own and felt fine and she finished her run. Hurt like blazes that night and the next day. Each subsequent time the pain during the night/next day got worse and worse.
Finally, she really ripped it out when my 3-year-old daughter tried to jump out of her arms and she had to reach behind her back to grab her. It dislocated and she couldn't get it back in. I tried, too, but no use. It was awful. EMS came because she started looking super pale and threw up. They wouldn't put it back in for fear of a lawsuit, so she had to go to ER. They drugged her up and knocked it back in. Terrible. She was in bed for three days and I had an orthopedic fit her in for surgery ASAP.
All is good now, or so it seems. We went water skiing last weekend and she was fine!

Wait? that was fake? - next you will be telling that what they did to him at the end of Braveheart wasn't real either! Which would ruin the movie for me.

Excellent
I dislocated my shoulder while running. Hit a patch of extra slippery ice that was covered by fresh snow, when I fell I tried to brace myself with my left hand, but I went down too hard. My left shoulder popped out right there, thought I broke my arm when it happened. Most painful thing that's ever happened to me, would not recommend it.
You seriously didn't post that did you? No one, nor the article, said the injury was from running, it was while running, specifically from a tumble.
He tripped and fell over. 5 seconds Google search

I would say Rojo was pretty clueless as to how it happened. More than likely he did not read the story and only the headline.
PS: I was replying directly to your post and not the story.
