I am curious what your thoughts are on value to a company a miler or a marathoner?

1. Marathoner and it's not even close
2. Marathoner
3. Marathoner, but it's close
4. Neither is worth much, but miler given the current state of US marathoning
4. The 10th ranked miler and marathoner are both completely unknown and worth nothing. Support they receive is really charity.

Marathoner going away. Kellyn Taylor was not in the top 5 in the last OT but has received a lot of attention for her race this weekend.
Sara Hall also received a ton of press for her win in Ottawa.
Sydney Devore also received some positive press for her performance in Pittsburgh.
I don't know the name of the 10th best miler.
***Celebrity Marathoner***

The 10th ranked marathoner in the US can actually be used at smaller marathons to impress hobby joggers. The trick to using a 10th ranked marathoner is they are good enough to win races as long as there isn't an attractive purse. So you just send them to run a handful of 'theme' marathons every year so they can be advertised as 'course record holder' while talking about how great your products are.

You nailed it. I could only think of Neely Spence when reading this.
Most running fans can name 10 US milers but can’t name 10 marathoners. Milers also race more than marathoners. The 10th best miler is getting a contract but the 10th marathoner isn’t.

Huh? I'm thinking your definition of a running fan is pretty darn narrow. As in, there are a few hundred of you. It's a country of 330 million, and a world of 8 billion. Roughly.
I suppose value to a company is dependent on how much the company needs broad appeal. Broad appeal requires broad notoriety, and marathoners will get that over milers every day of the week.
The % of the population who recognize Meb's name or Shalene's name is huge compared to the % that recognize, oh wait, I have no idea who any miler is.
Didn't pre run the mile? Yes ah I think so.
You answered 2 and I answered 4.
I don't understand why more groups other than Brooks and Hoka don't sponsor road teams. It is the only place that you can get attention all year long with Cross Roads and Track. You are not limited to just one venue.
