I think you’re being hard on Belgium. In the first half, they were definitely timid and looking for their rhythm, but in the second half they showed their class. The 1-2-3 build up play by hazard/KDB/lukaku was a thing of beauty that lead to Lukaku’s first goal, and the great play by Hazard on the counter. Out in the open, with great pace, and then dropped a nice pass to lukaku for lukaku’s second goal.
And Marteens goal is probably the best goal of the tournament so far.
I would say offensively, they had the third best game behind Portugal and Spain, so not a bad start to the World Cup. They have 3 points, and a 2 goal lead over England.
However, I’m not a fan of Roberto Martinez. His tactics are not allowing Belgium to really attack, and KDB is playing too far back. With Manchester City, he is in a more advancing roll, where his excellent passing skills are utilized.
Germany was terrible.
Argentina was terrible.
Brasil was okay.
So right now Spain and France are the only teams I really fear for Belgium.
Portugal will go as far as Ronaldo takes them, so they are very dependent.
If Belgium plays it right, this could be their year.
