i have done many marathons and never noticed being sore in my core, chest, etc.
not until i got into the 50m+ distances did i see an increased need for core strength
that said, i assume if my core was stronger, it would only help my marathon and half times.

Work them because it will be healthy for you.
I believe the consensus is that this will improve form
I train upperbody because I don't like having a chicken chest and weird, wiry arms. It's got to improve your arm drive though, which is important. Try running without your arms and tell me strong arms aren't important. I feel like this is a lot less important the farther you go up in distance, with a significant drop off after 5k.
Yes. They make you more attractive, which leads to so many other positive things.
Four words:

If your shoulders are so strong that you can do a planche push-up, than it may negatively affect your running. If not, then it probably doesn't have any effect.
yes. I have accumulated lactic acid in my chest and arms when I went to the well during one 5x800 session where I essentially went all out on all of them (~5 seconds slower than mile pace at the time), and during another hill workout in which I went to the well.
For Ultra Running I run the last mile on my hands just to show boat.
No. It's about endurance, not muscle.
