I have grown up around this group my entire life. What I do not understand is the disconnect between the very conservative bend Rednecks have towards anything. From what I can discern in boils down to the fact that they are against anything new or different.
That means new ideas, new people, new tech, new food, new clothes, music... Growing up in the rural and suburban south this is my take away. My relatives and my former classmates that I would describe as the most "redneck" are the people that still listen to classic rock, only wear blue jeans, no ethnic or different types or styles of food... all that is fine except that small mindedness creeps into their entire world view.
The kicker is that a great many of these people live very UN-conservative personal lives. They get married and divorced over and over, they have kids with numerous women/women have numerous baby daddies, they go far into debt for frivolous things like fishing boats, trucks, and trailers, and don't save. They are very familiar to dealing with the police, and they are very fond of illicit drugs and alcohol.
How do they square all this in their brains?
