If true, this is one of the stranger things I've heard lately. The athletes chose their own coach and somehow figured the Pepperdine assistant was the golden ticket? Bizarre, but interesting at the same time.
The athletes did not get to choose her as the new coach, even after asking to be a part of the process. I dont know why the administration wouldnt get rid of Sheffield.
And Drew Petersen used to run at UCD, so I guess it's all come full circle???
Honestly though, I sincerely hope Emma will be able to turn the program around. My only concern is that she'll run into problems with the administration, which, by keeping Coach Rahn around, has consistently proven over the last ~3 years that they don't care about the track program in the slightest. Until he's out (or until the entire admin department gets launched into the sun), I see a difficult road ahead for any UCD coach.

Don't have any insider info, but the writing should be on the wall regarding their next hire. Stop hiring coaches for the sole reason that they were able to run fast from the day they were born. Someone that has natural gifts far exceeding the norm can rarely explain those gifts effectively. This is true in all fields, as the most brilliant mathematicians make for horrible teachers to those that are much less gifted.
More often than not elite athletes like to tell themselves they had to work super hard to achieve their success, which in part is absolutely true, but it's often a case of succeeding despite the training they did rather than because of it. Additionally, elite athletes turned coaches have body control that they often c gan not teach to their athletes because it's so difficult to teach a sensation to someone who has never experienced it.
If Sheffield hires another former world class athlete that somehow makes the program tank even further he's got to start seriously worrying about his own job if he's not already.

So true about the ex-star athlete getting the coaching job. Seen it so many times. They just don't get it if someone can't do what they did.

Administration didn’t allow Sheff in the process. Athletes were very envolved
I don't really know where you are getting your info but the athletes had no say outside of a couple of them meeting the potential candidates. Then the team was informed that Emma had been hired. Please stop spreading fake news

Cmon be realistic, have you ever heard of a division 1 program choosing their own coach with no say from the head coach? Or any division 1 admin (especially this apparently trash/untransparent one) letting the athletes choose? Good one.

That’s exactly why I posted it. If it were common then no reason to talk about it.
Why would the athletes meet the candidates unless they were involved in the process of hiring?
Any word on whether UCD will be competing in the NAIA next year?

For the same reason they go through the entire interview process when they know they are just going to promote from within. They have to at least give the perception that they care what they think. They never do.
Concept: Sheffield brings on a coach who pushed drugs, admin is breathing down Sheffield’s neck after that coach is fired and he barely still has his job. Sheffield “involves” athletes in coach choosing process to show the admin he’s a Good Guy, but doesn’t actually give a singular crap what the athlete says. Sheffield wasn't involved in the process. Admin wouldn't let him be.
