I've been to Hayward many times. The media however is in the west grandstand. I'm not sure during a meet I've ever sat in east grandstand. I know the track town speakers stuff is on that side.
I love Hayward. I figured they'd try and keep some of its design elements but the fact of the matter is most people sit in the west grandstand.
And if a more modern design will help a new generation of fans come out in for it. Average age at the meets in Oregon isn't very young. But if a newer design pisses off the old timers and doesn't do anything for next generation it's not worth it.
I think however the tradition and quality and setting is why most people come to Hayward and don't see why that can't exist with a new stadium. That's why they need to show what the 12000 sets stadium will really look like instead of showing us some idealized 30000 seat stadium.
