When will the flat-earthers whom still believe EPO is a performance enhancer for running/cycling truly understand what a placebo effect is -
One of the most fascinating revelations about EPO in recent years is that it might not even work. It is medically effective, but there is recent evidence that it does not provide any advantages for the sport of cycling. Hold that thought for now.
That being said, the findings were striking. It appeared EPO was completely useless as a performance enhancer for cycling.
Medicinal chemists always say things are "impossible" that doping pros do all the time.
Big Pharma on the other hand....
It is important to note that EPO can help with lactic acid build up. You can see how that could appeal to baseball players, especially ones who spend much of a game crouching. It is possible they suffer the most lactic acid build-up of any other position. They undoubtedly suffer a lot of soreness when they wake up in the morning.
I would love to see a reporter follow up on Castillo’s EPO use by interviewing catchers to get their thoughts on how something like EPO theoretically could help them.
Wow!...80 game suspension and he loses half of his 15 mil salary!
OP, thanks for starting this thread. I've been meaning to start one on it. Can a doping expert tell me why a catcher would take EPO. I guess if Marion Jones and others in Balco were on it - wasn't that the case? - there must be some reason for it. Could it really just be the crouching??
I put this up on the front page in the yellow box under the title, "What?? Epo doesn't work on elite Kenyans (haha) but it works on baseball players. WhiteSox catcher busted for EPO"
Endurance is the secret to all things in life: sex, sports, war, musics etc.
rojo,
Placebo effect. Get it? Placebo effect. If you think you are Superman, you will behave like Superman.

my guess is he was on whole bunch of things for awhile and was getting away with it so why not take EPO as well.
if it was just EPO it doesn't seem like the benefit would be worth the 7 .5 million dollar risk.

Did you read any of the links? There was a recent study on cyclists using EPO with no benefit? Lance must have loved that study.
Here are some interesting quotes from the link in the first post to The Hardball Times "The Science Behind Welington Castillo’s Curious PED Selection":
"One of the most fascinating revelations about EPO in recent years is that it might not even work. It is medically effective, but there is recent evidence that it does not provide any advantages for the sport of cycling. Hold that thought for now. "
"Let’s go back to the study examining the effects of EPO on cycling. Scientists designed a study that was as close to a clinical trial as they could. Ideally, you would want a few hundred experienced, professional cyclists. The problem is that there obviously is not a huge pool of these kind candidates to choose from, and of course, those that do qualify are prohibited from taking EPO at all. The best the scientists could do was "48 well-trained male amateur cyclists.""
"The limitations of the study mean the results need to be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, the findings were striking. It appeared EPO was completely useless as a performance enhancer for cycling."
"So if there is even the possibility EPO is ineffective for cyclists, how could it possibly help baseball players? And why would MLB ban it?"
"If it doesn’t work, then why do players do it?"
"One explanation is the placebo effect. It’s real and it’s powerful."
They linked to the Telegraph with some more interesting quotes:
"The scientists behind the trial, which is published in the Lancet, say athletes are "naive" about the benefits of illicit substances such as EPO, but that myths about their effectiveness go unchallenged in the murky world of doping."
""It’s just tragic to lose your career for something that doesn’t work, to lose seven yellow jerseys for a drug that has no effect," said Jules Heuberger"

Haven't others said EPO would help you more in 800/1500 than longer distances? So someone who has very little endurance could EPO help them more than a highly trained cyclist?
Personally I think it helps even the cyclists.
I've long said that I've never seen anyone get around the bases quite like Welington Castillos.
obviously he was mindweak and didnt have the WILL TO WIN. and thus used EPO to get to 90% of his potential, when he should have been trying to get to 100% of his potential. and as we all know from canova and rekrunner, you can only get to 100% of your potential doing it clean, if you use PEDs you only get in shape faster but only to 90% of your potential and thus you are lazy and mindweak and have no WILL TO WIN.
i mean imagine how many tours lance would have won if he would have just been clean? or how many mr universe comps arnold would have won if he would have done it clean, and his biceps would have been bigger since he only ever got them to 90%!!! MIND BLOWN!!!
marion jones prob could have won 26 gold medals but she was mindweak and only was able to run at 90% of her potential.
just like weed being illegal and thus a need for war on drugs....it starts becoming legal and boooom cartels are running out of business.
if PEDs dont do anything, we should get them off the banned list, then big pharma will run out of business!!!!
legalize PEDs!!!!
you only say this when its not a thread where you have to side with either rekrunner/canova or me/subway/casual
you think it helps? dear lord man.....you crucify al sal for GREY accusations, but you are now just "thinking" epo might work haha....hope you dont ever hassle gatlin again as a cheat, since now you are becoming one of the PED doubters as well.

One of the dumbest quotes ever. Of course EPO works.
Am I supposed to believe EPO doesn't work and is just a placebo effect? No way.
If these drugs don't work, then please tell me why these people who get popped suck when they try to come back post-drug ban.
rojo,
Why don't you do some immersive journalism, walk down to Hopkins, and get some EPO treatments started and see if you can get back to regional class instead of blindly stating that the drug does work, when, in fact, it may not work and only be placebo?
I believe it is placebo after understanding Big Pharma. They push sugar pills and sugar drugs.
Don't mention Rekrunner, your post will be deleted, mine was.

+1. I remember when Eddy H. was tearing up the master's scene before he got caught. There's no chance that would've happened without it.

Look. I'm pretty sure EPO works.
But two things: nowadays most bans haven't been for EPO. Also, placebo effect. It certainly can have in impact.
