I've never understood why you do a 10-year deal as an AD. It just seems stupid to me. I remember when Texas gave football coach Mack Brown a n 8 or 10-year deal in 2012 I thought to myself, "No one in the real world has 10-year job security, why would an AD give it to a coach?"
They give it to him to make sure he doesn't go elsewhere.
I agree they might be able to say, "we'll give you 5 years guaranteed" take it or leave it and get the same result. But with a non-revenue sport with track, Holloway is one of the best. I'm sure they can fire him with cause (if there is some sort of scandal) and not pay in the future. If the team dips a bit, no one really will care and they'll still have a decent coach. If he nails it out of the park, they're comfortable paying him what's in the contract and they won't have to worry about him going somewhere else. So they get something out of it.
But I think if the state put in a policy "no one can have more than a 3year contract" the result would be the same, but Holloway might ask for more money if another school would guarantee him 5.
I think in high profile sports where coaches' rarely last that long 10 year contracts are idiotic. A dip in performance for a year and two and the AD will have to can the coach and then be on the hook for paying 2 coaches. Track and field I can see it because the coach is more likely to be there for the contract.
