I got 57.24, 57.34, and 57.37. I came first, third, and fourth respectively.
this is actually pretty good consistency. well done.
however, the "mental" side of 400m running will come to you with practice. having run the distance three times is enough to let you know you enjoy it, and want to continue with it, but you will learn something from every race and in time you will get a much better sense of what you are capable of doing.
some things to consider:
1. it is way easier to slow down that it is to speed up. you might think you can kick at the 300m point but you are not actually increasing your speed, all you're doing is slowing down the rate at which you are slowing down. this point implies that you should start fast. a lot of your learning about the event will consist of convincing yourself to start fast enough. those guys who you beat, and then they beat you, they learned this point. now it's your turn.
2. there is a concept in 400m racing known as the float. this is also sometimes called the Fly. you will need to practice this a lot. it is a portion of the race where you are trying to run as fast as you can without accelerating, without slowing down, whilst maintaining relaxed arm mechanics, whilst staying light on your feet as though you were running on hot coals, whilst preserving energy and not getting out of breath. it is in fact an impossible dream, like marrying the virgin daughter of a millionaire brewery owner, it's theoretically possible but beyond reasonable expectations. but the point is that you must strive for this in your races - the float, that is, not the virgin daughter.
3. to outsiders, the 400m looks like a really simple race. you start, you run one lap, you finish. could anything be any simpler than that? the only folk who properly understand the intricacy of the event are folk who have raced it a lot. talk to as many other 400m runners as you possibly can, and listen to them.
below is a link to a website with some really good information on 400m training.
have fun.
cheers.
