Is it the bike who causes the crash or the idiots walking in lane 1?
(Any thoughts about whether bike pacing is good, bad or indifferent?)

Woe be upon walkers and non-athletes who presume to invade our place of peace and solace. Let the wrath of God wreak havoc unto any who dare venture into lane 1 without being either a) and athlete or b) an individual with direct permission from said athlete to be there (in this case, bike pacer).
As for bike pacing, its fine. It gets frustrating as an athlete when your coach has no idea how to handle a bike, but when done right, it can be very helpful

This is true. It's a safety issue, as this article illustrates.
This is 100% the stupid cycling coaches fault. If I was the one hit, I would sue him. Every track has a sign on the gate that says "no strollers, bikes, skateboards, or wheeled shoes". This guy is an idiot and should have to pay damages.
You want to pace your athletes? Lose 50 pounds, tubby, and run with them. Or hire a pacer. What a tool.
And lane one does not belong to you. There is proper etiquette and walking in lane 1 while ignoring what is going on behind you is not ok, but to plow through them on a bike is ridiculous.
I think biking on a track is worse than walking in lane one.
If you read the article it sounds like the coach is a real jerk and just kept riding and crashed into the oblivious walker without trying to avoid him. If you watch the video you will see that the coach turned into the infield to go around the walker but the walker also went into the infield.
Who the hell needs a pacer when doing track work? You can get your splits ever 50 meters if you want.
The runner took the person out. The coach went to the inside and got a case of the wobbles.
After watching it again closely, did the runner pull on the coach's shirt?
what a retard. who in their right mind thinks its ok to ride a bike into a group of people on a public track
No one should walk in lane one. These walkers are to blame.
sure it's not ok to just plow through them. but honestly, these stupid walkers on lane one can drive you crazy. on my local public track, there's a sign at the entrance that walkers must use only the outer two lanes. it's even written on the track itself. I keep telling them to please leave at least lane one to runners who're doing intervals. they just don't learn. what's worse, they stumble across lanes while not paying attention because they're on their phones. it can get dangerous. so eff them.
A bike should NEVER be on a track.
1) It can damage the track
2) He can hurt others
Damn surrender monkey French...
Coach is to blame. Bikes should not be used on tracks.
Is this track posted with signs saying 'no bicycles' and could the coach read/understand English?
Was coach speaking French while trying to verbally warn people ahead of him? Likely they did not understand.
Did coach assume people walking ahead would get out of the way? From my experience in Europe, people do not walk on running tracks and only more serious runners use the tracks. Coach perhaps did not understand that it is different in US.

A bike will not damage a track nearly as much as a runner. The rolling resistance of a typical bike being ridden is about 4-8% of someone running.
I dont blame the bike for riding the coach. It seems like the coach was asking for it.
Why are people in Flagstaff walking on a track? Aren't there parks and trails everywhere? When did the whole going for a stroll on a track thing start? Have people waled on tracks as long as there have been tracks?

Pardon?
http://www.klove.com/news/2018/03/24/French-Officer-Sacrifices-Himself-To-Save-Another/Never walk in lane 1. You deserve to get plowed if you're caught lackin in lane 1
That coach could have rode up to the walkers and asked them to move well before his runners came through.
That's really the most perplexing thing. It's Flagstaff, the weather is perfect, there's a huge urban trail system. Literally hundreds of better places to go for a walk in Flag than around the track.
