This evening, Halifax Harrier Max Burgin (that's Halifax in Yorkshire, England) smashed his own age group (15) record for 800 metres whilst winning the BMC Grand Prix A race. His time of 1.47.5 shattered his own record (set last season). It is also a new British record for the U17 age group .... and Max is still, obviously, 15. Coached by his Granddad, Brian Burgin ... currently fighting serious illness ... he's a humble and down to earth lad. He's taking time to concentrate on his exams now ... but what a start to the season. It will be interesting to see what he does at 1,500m.
It's fantastic news.
By my reckoning, that means that he's currently ranked the fourth fastest 800m guy in the UK this season, behind Kyle Langford, Jake Wightman, and Andrew Osagie (who ran just 1 second faster in the Diamond League yesterday). Also makes him ranked fifth in Europe currently.
Seems middle-distance running is enjoying a renaissance outside of Africa at last.
Kyle Langford should have beaten the Kenyan at the Commonwealths who is being lauded as the new Rudisha, but left his amazing kick too late.
I see also that George Mills is making his comeback after suffering a very bad injury that put him out last season. He was showing amazing talent himself in both the 800 and 1500 in 2016 after just turning 17.
I hope Max's parents and Granddad never allow him to come to this forum so he avoids reading the racist filth that guys like El K and Rekrunner constantly spew out to knock the self-belief of talented non-Africans like him.
