One HIP LOWER than the other! WHAT TO DO? 5/28/2005 4:15AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Ok, well today I found out I have one hip slightly lower than the other, essentially creating a leg discepancy.....Has anybody had this problem?

Would wearing a shoe heel lift on the short leg alleviate this problem? My athletic trainer says breaking down the muscles, by him stretching me out on the right side of my body (the hip thats lower, "longer leg") over a period of 12 weeks should help level out the hips.

Would did you do to correct this? I knew I felt like one left was hitting the ground harder for about a year, but thought nothing of it. Now I finally went it and got checked....PLEASE ANY INPUT IS APPRECIATED!

Find a physical therapist/massage therapist that can pinpoint which muscles may be tight which are creating the descrepancy. Then they can direct you to do massage/stretches/strengthening exercises which will over time alleviate the problem. I would only recommend heel lifts and inserts only as a last resort once all other natural avenues have been exhausted. Good luck.

Only solution: chiropractor. Run away from any other kind of physical therapist / massage specialist. Waste of time (and money).

I work as a massage therapist.
Visit a chiropractor.
Then have some soft tissue work.

I agree. i had the same problem when i was a young high school punk. i kept having iliotibial band problems because my hips were out of alignment. the physios solution was a heel lift for the "shorter" leg. not until i saw a chiro, was the problem solved. once the ur hips are realigned, then get some soft tisue work for the supporting muscles

This is probably caused by your psoas being too tight or in spasms. Go to this site to learn more.

A chiropractor will be able to realign your hips, but you need to stretch the psoas muscles to prevent this from happening again.

Chiropractic is quackery, go see a physio. All chiropractors do is release the pressure in your joints giving a day's relief at best. Physios can do this for pain relief and also can help make sure this isn't a recurring problem in the future.

Hey G,

I also had the same problem for a little while. I did a 10-mile race on uneven asphalt, making one hip lower than the other. For some reason, this caused my knee to hurt so I thought it was my knee for about a month until I saw a doctor and she told me about my hips. All I did was a simple exercise and it went away in like 5 days.

What she had me do, was to lay down on my back and grab my knees together (i would wrap my arms around my knees) and try to spread my legs using my arms as resistance. I would do 10 sets of 6 seconds of resistance. I would then switch to putting my elbows in between my legs, and trying to squeeze my legs together doing the same amount of reps.

After about two days of this, my knee pain diminished quite noticibly and went away completely after a week, and my hips also realigned.

I don't know if we have the same problem, but its not too tiring and worth a shot.

Oh and I would do the exercises twice a day: once in the morning and once after practice in the afternoon.
