Well, I think I can be quite close to guess why he did it. When he agreed to be coached by COACH J.S in 2016 for his
winter buildup , they agreed to start 1 November (when the 1 November came Kiprop changed his mind and told he wanted to keep on with his old usual program). So the beginning of November seem to be usual start for Kiprops buildup for coming season. What I know about the effects of EPO it helps mostly for the long distances and Kiprop communicated he was going for 5000m that coming season 2018. So my guess is that he took it just for that reason and thought it was almost no
chance to be caught in off season. But it`s quite naive to think he was alone in this decision. If he did it, there is some more questions to get an answer. Who helped him to inject EPO? He did it alone? That I can hardly believe.
