My freshman year, I ran a 3 mile in cross country in the low 18's. During track, I ran 10:46, 4:45, and 2:10. (3200m, 1600m, 800m)
Sophomore year, I ran 17:10 in cross country. I was injured for most of track but still ran 10:47, 4:56, and 2:10.
I'm in my junior year now. I ran 16:40's in cross country and now in track, I'm running low 10's (10:10 so far), 4:39 (soon to be faster), and 2:12 (only 800 so far, it was very windy and it was an off day. I had raced a mile earlier too. I split 2:08 in a relay indoors though).
Why am I so much slower in cross country? I'm destroying guys in track who were destroying me in xc. I don't think it has as much to do with my training as it does some other factor. I do the exact same workouts as others on my team and they still run faster in xc while I run faster in track. In xc, I was doing way more mileage than anybody else and doing all the workouts with them so I know it's not a problem with low mileage.
Are there any runners who sucked at cross country and then got better? What did they do to make this happen? I really don't know what I can do to be a better cross country runner.
