Derek Clayton was the world record holder in the marathon for up to 14 years, if you disregard the incompetent record keeping of the 1970s which would have had the record change hands four or five times during that span.
I mention this because Kimetto's record is nearly 4 years old, and I don't see anyone knocking it down any time soon. Kipchoge maybe has a shot this fall; I believe his best years are/will be behind him in 2019, and I believe this twice-annual race to set up world records has a lifespan similar to social media. It's going away on a fast train.
Yes, the men's record is soft. But 2:04 and 2:05 is the new version of the 2:09 and 2:10. The 2:02 is going to stand until someone, possibly not anyone even running competitively now, runs a low 2:01 and laughs about it.
