I was hoping for some feedback or guidance on using Lydiard training. I followed a programme and have had very poor results, I am now 4 minutes down on my PB for a 10k.which is unusual given the success of Lydiard’s training methods.
I purchased Healthy Intelligent Training and subsequently a 10k training plan from the Lydiard Foundation, the plan was well structured and lots of supplement information.
I got stuck into the programme and followed it to the letter; I ran by feel but always stayed within the paces and heart rates zones given in the programme. I did find some of the out and back paces too slow so at the start, so I increased the pace on these, but again never went over the recommended HR
Everything bar the usually life obstacles was going well, I did the first week of the hill resistance and my times for my aerobic runs reduced by approx 30 seconds per mile the hard work was I believed starting to pay off and I thought if I run like this after one week of hill resistance I will be flying after an additional 3 weeks, but as predicted my body was getting tired, during the hill phase I found it difficult irrespective of the pace to complete my aerobic runs often only doing 45 minute instead of 90min. when the hill resistance was complete the wheels started to come off.
I returned to my club track sessions to begin the anaerobic 4 week block again ran at the recommended paces, I expected this to be difficult and it was, I was running times comparable to a couple of years ago and given the volume couldn’t go much faster e.g. 12 x 400m at 90-95 seconds, after each session I could barley do a cool down, I fell like a bus had run me over.
I started the integration and raced a few times running times slower than ever, I am now 4 minutes down on my PB for a 10k. Half way through the races my legs fill with lactic and it curtains; funnily my breathing is still deep even at 180 bpm. At this point I lost all belief in the programme and essentially stopped following it.
I have no idea how to stop the slide; I don’t know if the Lydiard system didn’t suit or I interpreted the training advice incorrectly, I feel like I have wasted 5 months of work for nothing
Has anyone faced something similar or can provide a training programme to get out of this rut
Incidentally I had used the HADD training system recommended by other on this board a number of years ago and it worked very well for me, doing two harder runs a week seemed to work much better than lydiards system, I reduced my PB for 5k by 40 seconds.
Can anyone tell me how I can stop the slide in performance, I am considering a new lynaird foundation program for a half marathon in September, but I’m not sure if I should change something.
I appreciate any thoughts
