Eliminate all events except for the following:
100m
Mile
4x400m
Pole Vault
Imagine if all the talent and money were dedicated towards just these 4 events. Prize purses / sponsorships could be large enough to give incentive for more athletes pursuing careers in the 100m. How better would the mile be if all 800-10k runners trained for that event since day 1? Meets would just consist of multiple heats of each event - IE high school, college, age groups, and multiple heats of professional. More meets on city streets.
I think all of the other events dilute the potential for the sport.
So, you have a 4x4, but no open 400or 4x1. I think those events are very exciting and it wouldn't add much to the length of a meet. You could still have a 90 min meet:
7:00 - National Anthem and welcome
7:05 - Vault pit opens with a reasonable height and some rule to make the thing go faster. Needs to be done by 8:15.
7:10 - 100m final
7:20 - 400m final
7:30 - Mile final
7:50 - 4 x 100m final
8:05 - 4x 400m final
8:15 - vault is over and awards ceremony starts
8:25 - fireworks
8:30 - stadium begins to empty
This leaves 40 min between the 100m and the 4 x 100m Plenty-o-time to recover.
This leaves 45 min between the 400m and the 4 x400m. Maybe not the best, but you could still run fast times.
Spectators get to see 5 exciting races and decent vaulting action.
