There's a 6th grade boy at the school where I work who's interested in wheelchair racing. He has no legs from just below the hips. In his regular chair, he is extremely fast and agile and he looks to have exceptional upper body strength. He takes gym and he amazed everyone by doing the mile run test.
I asked him about racing and he's interested. But I've never been around anyone in the sport to know how to get started---they have races at the high school state meet (Ohio), but that's as close as I've ever been, only seen it on TV otherwise.
I know that he will need a chair. I saw a used one on Ebay for $2000 and new ones start there and go higher. Not sure about the family and if they could handle that kind of investment. I hoped to connect him with someone who could let him use a racing chair to test it out. I inquired at a local running store---waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime, anyone on here know how to get a beginner started?
