My recollection of the incident was that he didn't bring spikes, only flats, because that's what they race with in CA meets. It was pretty muddy and he slipped off the start and throughout the race. Still got 3rd if I remember correctly. Kid was unbelievably good later that year and into his freshman year of college. Silky smooth. Always hoping to see him make a comback. He placed pretty high at USA outdoors after his freshman year in the 5k at like 18 years old. I always thought he was a lock for an Olympic team in the future. Had a never ending string of injuries and pretty disappeared after college other than a few races here and there. Hope he's doing well wherever he ended up.
ok thank you, I remember watching live updates during the race and I remember someone mentioning a shoe issue. It's sad that Chris Derrick got mono and didn't race at outdoor nationals. that 2 mile duel would have been epic

lastest update is that he is now an assistant coach at OSU for both cross country and track. He is working towards his masters there as well
