I think the wind is what wrecked Kirui's race, not only the effort of building such a huge lead. When Kirui made his move, he seemed to have run into the worst wind of the race. His jacket looked baggy, not form-fitting. The gusts made his arms look like luffing sails. Aerodynamically, I have to think that his jacket, in effect, made him a larger target for the wind.
I think he had bad luck with the timing of the move, relative to the gusty wind, but don't you think there's a big energy cost for having your arms turned into sails, maybe even big enough to have cost him the race?
