Huddle’s.

What a composed and competent woman. Awesome.

I feel that Desi pulled a psychological move over Shalane and Molly by offering to sacrifice herself, and saying that she was going to drop out. She was downplaying her ability, while making the other runners think that they didn't have to go as hard, or that is was okay to maybe dropout or slow down.
It's a way of taking the aggression away. Even Shalane said it was weird. Shalane is a class act, but you could tell that she was thinking that what Desi was doing made no sense.
I believe something else happened:
Des felt bad early on and offered Shalane her honest help. Later she saw a gap opening in front of Molly Huddle and - already thinking she it might not be her day - she tried to close that gap. A Des contending for the win wouldn't have spent so much effort on this.
So, she is doing all this and forget that she felt bad. Now she actually feeling pretty alright. And looks around: Shalane is gone, Molly couldn't follow, now Des is in 3rd or 4th. And suddenly the whole focus switches from just helping to "Wow, so everybody is hurtig even more? I can do this!"
The rest is history.

This and suddenly realizing that as bad as she felt, everyone else felt that way or worse. The only elite really prepared for this race was Yuki after he won that marathon in January in sub-zero temps.
Same story every year with Shalane...big build up and doesn't pull through. I agree, she's a legend in her own mind.

Ummm, OK, the IAAF.org site has it wrong regarding major marathons, and I should have caught that. But here are her major marathon results according to Wikipedia:
World Marathon Majors
Gold medal – first place 2017 New York City Marathon
Silver medal – second place 2010 New York City Marathon
Bronze medal – third place 2014 Berlin Marathon
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shalane_FlanaganANYONE that can even think of Shalane in a negative way (let alone post all of the crap) has got some real personal issues and may want to reconsider visiting LetsRun as a means of much need personal therapy.
Regarding remarks made on this thread:
1) she is a CLASS ACT. She is humble. She is tenacious. She is a champion.
2) she is one of the top thee american womens distance runners of all-time (possibly #1 or 2).
3) she grew up in the Boston area (lived there through high school)....YES Boston is her hometown.
Shalane is a better runner than I'll ever be. When she's in her fifties she will run better than I did in my twenties. My issues with her have nothing to with her abilities as a runner.
I've seen the term "class act" being bandied about her in this post. She is far from it. When she doesn't win...there is always an excuse. She had a bad day at the office. She had to go pee. I have never once heard her say "I didn't win because 'X' ran a better race."
Great interview. Gained respect for her.
if Rupp could do interviews like this, even once a year, almost everyone on letsrun would like him a lot more.
i really like him, but he needs to face the cameras and tell us what happened. it'd make him seem more human and we'd certainly understand if he said, "yeah, wow...it just got super cold and i was was feeling terrible and knew i couldn't get it back together. i really wanted to drop out so i just decided to do it. Big props to those that finished and congrats to them etc...!".
come on man!
he must have actual anxiety problems

You know damn well most of the people who did like him would still tear him apart for making excuses. He likely doesn't face the media much because of how hated he is now.

You're dead wrong. Nice try.
https://twitter.com/ShalaneFlanagan/status/975759770719277056Oops, here's the right link to what she said right after Boston in 2014 when she came up short. Pretty sure this makes her a class act and I don't see any excuses here
