We saw Shalane Flanagan walking very slowly through the Copley hotel and fortunately she stopped to talk to us.
She said she got cold very early in the race, and early on Des told her she wasn't feeling well and was probably going to drop out. Shalane then told Des she was going to take a porta potty pee break. Shalane felt the pace was so slow she could jump in and go (rather than just pee while running) and catch up.
Shalane said today's race was very unsatisfying for her, so she wasn't sure it was her last one. I asked her what would be more appealing chasing a fast time this fall or defending her title in NY and she said what would be more appealing was helping her teammates (Gwen Jorgensen and Amy Cragg) make the next Olympic team. She says the key for Gwen is how healthy she can stay to do high mileage. Shalane said her goal for Gwen is just to make the Olympic team.
Shalane was happy Des got the win and then they hugged in the lobby when Des came buy.
