You folks realise if the weather in London doesn’t go berserk and the elites perform to expectations it will spell the end of Boston as a prestige brand, right?
Chicago is already RIP as a Major. Boston is now RIP as a Major. That leaves NYC but the runs there are too slow. It seems time for advertisers to focus on one US marathon as a Major - bump up the prize money - and attract a lot of top talent, like Dubai.
And New York cancelled in 2012. This year's conditions may have provided feel good stories of underdogs prevailing that will sell in the short term, but Boston was already struggling to attract the big names. Fact is, as it is, they're unable to get a Kipchoge or a Bekele and it's not going to be easier going forward.
And it's great to have an American winner, but even though she would never admit this publicly, I'm certain Desi Linden herself would have preferred that top ten list to include the usual actors - more Edna Kiplagats fewer less well-known part-time runners. Because when someone looks at that top ten a year from now, it will look like she beat a weak field. Kawauchi, at least, will be seen to have taken a major scalp in Kirui.
