being the best and winning. he will slow down and settle in once he's gapped the field so much that they wont catch him. hes a genius. he'll win because hes the best ever
Interesting that all the American women have placed their bibs in a way so that their jacket could be taken off. Most of the East Africans have their bibs pinned over thenzippers on their jacket, which would make it difficult to take off

Question for the PC police, so if a white runner wins, do you want us to not mention the fact directly and go out of our way and act like it's not significant. We could say something like, "Rupp's win is unusual because a man of recent East-African descent has won 26 of the last 27 races (Lee Bong Ju of South Korea won in 2001)."
Except it has nothing to do with him being white and only indirectly has anything to do with the others being East-African. It has primarily to do with: being born and trained at altitude. That is what is unique about the East Africans. Secondarily it has to do with lifestyle and other factors that may help or hurt their training. But if you want to be accurate to the science and the sport you should simply talk about them in terms of altitude. Ryan Hall, as an example, is white, but he was likely a standout just as much because of his childhood altitude experience as anything else. And in that regard he shares more with his East African counterparts than he does with the majority of American runners.

Is it just me or do the Nike-sponsored men's white coats look like sails in the wind? They add tape to the shins to diminish the drag in their sub-two thing, and now they wear this on a day with a strong headwind?
can anyone provide a link to the live stream?
Just when it looked like the men's pack would catch Kawauchi, Evans Chebet made a big surge and now he's out in front with Kawauchi as those two have a 50-meter lead or so on the rest of the pack.
5K IS 1509 FOR Rup. That's 2:07:51 pace.
There are going to be some awful blowups.
A few men plus one woman.

Very surprised by the number of baggy jackets in both races.

No. It's physiological too. Shorter torso, long leg. Low distal leg mass.

My predictions. Probably way off, but that's ok, I'm just doing this for fun. I emitted all runners with PBs over 2:10 for the sake of simplicity (with the exception of Biwott)
1st/ 2:11:30: Geffy Kirui (defending champ, 2:06:27)
2nd/ 2:11:35: Lelisa Desisa (2-time champ, 2013 WC silver, 2:04:45)
3rd/ 2:11:45: Lemi Berhanu: (2016 champ, 2:04:33)
4th/ 2:12:00: Wilson Chebet (2:05:36)
5th/ 2:12:15: Galen Rupp (2017 runner-up, silver and bronze Olympic medallist, 2:09:20)
6th/ 2:12:20: Nobert Kigen (Amsterdam runner-up, 2:05:13)
7th/ 2:12:40: Shadrack Biwott (4th last year, 2:12:01)
8th/ 2:12:45: Evans Kiplagat Chebet (Valencia runner-up, 2:05:30)
9th/ 2:12:50: Phelimon Cherop (Toronto Champion, 2:06:52)
10th/ 2:12:55: Felix Kandie (2:06:03)
11th/ 2:13:00: Dathan Ritzenhein (2:07:47)
12th/ 2:13:15: Abdi Nageeye (2:08:16)
13th/ 2:13:20: Abdi Abdirahman (2:08:56)
14th/ 2:13:25: Yuki Kawauchi (2:08:14)
15th/ 2:13:27: Lusapho April (2:08:32)
16th/ 2:13:30: Arne Gabius (German NR, 2:08:33)
17th/ 2:13:32: Kentaro Nakamoto (2:08:35)
Ryan Hall was just a freak, say what you want about him and his religious beliefs but in terms of talent that is a level that doesn't come around often

Unfortunately, it's very likely. But add me to the list of people who'd love to see Kawauchi win this.
