Sa: big day was finally here. Lucky with the weather, 45-55F, mostly sunny. Bit windy, not too much, probably as good as it gets next to the ocean. I started going out at 6:40 pace, shooting for 2:55 or a least a PR. Fun fact: Ahead of me were, among others, two guys in the Nike 4%ers and one guy wearing those barefoot running sandals - I guess you can get those for less than $250. The course was rolling hills throughout, and I couldn't really find a group to run with. There were a couple of guys in my pace range, but I felt like they always ran the uphills too hard (maybe I have to man up), so I was mostly on my own. Stayed right around target pace for the first half, half split was 1:27:37, in 7th place, but I already figured the pace didn't feel easy enough. To my surprise, a group of four runners appeared out of nowhere from behind, gunning 6:20-6:30 pace. Since it got windier, I thought I should try to hang on. Did that for 2-3 miles, then I realized this is suicide. Tried to hold at least 6:40 pace. At mile 17 or so, there was a U-turn, so I noticed that the guy in running sandals was in first place (4%ers go home devastated!). Also, he was only 3-4 minutes ahead of me maybe. Couldn't hold 6:40 pace for much longer, the second half was even hillier, sizable headwind for a while as well. It was not easy mentally, the 2nd half was out and back into the backcountry, virtually no spectators - quite the opposite to my last marathon (NYC), I think some adrenalin might have helped. But at least I started picking up people again. Around mile 20 or so, I passed the running sandals guy, he was down to a jog - Tarahumara sandals went home devastated in the end. Sad! I was battling it out for 6th place with a guy for a while, left him behind, then I was in no man's land again. Finished in 2:57:07, happy with a PR in the end. 6th place overall, 2nd place AG, that was about what I could expect.
Looking back at my training, I guess (as some of you suggested) that 2:55 was the upper bar on a fast course in perfect conditions. Conditions were pretty good, but the course in Newport is not exactly fast. There are no big hills, but it's really rolling hills throughout, in the end the cumulative elevation gain was a third higher than NYC according to Strava and Garmin.
Next marathon will be Boston 2019! On that note, good luck to all of you out there on Monday! I hope I'll manage to watch this feast.
