Try to picture 2018 Galen Rupp charging down Boylston street and NOT winning the race. I can't even do it. It's like picturing a twelve-dimensional object.

Agreed
He actually lost to a fellow entrant who won Boston and the World Champs last year. Doesn't seem so inconceivable to me.
Keep this race in mind.

You're kidding , right? He lost last year in the last half of the race to the best marathoner in the world last year, Kirui, who will
be running again this year.
Plus Tola is running, who ran 10000m in 27:06, and he has a half marathon time of 59: 37, and a marathon time of 2:04.
Rupp could get blasted off the road by that guy, in the beginning, in the middle, or in the end. Dude has it all.
Yes, Rupp has a chance of winning, but I give him a 50 percent chance of winning, because of the aforementioned guys who are running. One beat him already, and the other one is an aerobic beast. Rupp will finish no lower than third, but getting the win is going to be even tougher than last year's race.
And don't forget Lelisa is a double boston marathon winner, so if he is up for it, then that will be another challenge.
I gotta go with Tola

Those were dress rehearsals. You can fool Galen once!

Very wise.
I think we see him on the podium tho
He wont even come in the top 10. According to the Letsrun trolls. There are like 15 guys with better PRs. Rupp is only a 2:09 runner so forget it...
My dark horse is Yuki Kawuachi FTW.

I am rooting for Yuki big time, I do not think he can win but I hope he runs in the 2:08-2:09 range. Let us hope the weather is favorable and it will be fun to watch.
Depends on the pace. If it’s a 2:08-2:10 snooze fest then yes Galen can win that easily. Anything faster and he will lose.

Would be nice . I’m rooting for him.

Except this inevitability, that Hardloper touches on, I think is why I'm not that excited when he does well.
Boston is affiliated with Adidas, so they won't make a weak elite field to bolster Salazar and co.
Hi Hardloper!

If he doesn't win, it won't be for lack of trying.

So, you're saying he's pretty soft?

Rupp has heart like a chicken, lacks the miles under his legs.. will never break 209
So you can't visualize an East African on hot sauce beating Rupp. I can and potentially more than one.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
