I'm a hs distance runner who is starting my 11th season of cross country/track (same coaches) at my school. For our top group, our indoor season ended a week before the official outdoor season started. Our coach told us to take the week completely off in between seasons to reduce the risk of injury from year round running, I'm not debating the merits of that. My question is why is our coach having us only do 30-40 minute easy runs this week (1st of outdoor)? My group was doing 45-55 miles a week with 2-3 workouts per week during indoor season. Wouldn't it make more sense to do some workouts this week? There are only 12 weeks until the State championship, shouldn't we start training immediately? We only took a week off, I don't think we would have lost a lot of fitness or wouldn't be able to handle a longer/faster run or a workout. Won't we lose more fitness this way by basically having a week of only junk mileage?
