5) Ovett's perfect day was probably the World Cup in 77, with that 12.0 round the last curve, destroying Walker and the rest in half a dozen strides. 2 of Coe's were his Olympic wins. I don't believe Ovett was unduly affected by heat or illness in Moscow, as he ran the last 100m in the 1500 final (12.6, easing up a little in last few strides) faster than he did when winning the 800m (12.7!). Coe just wanted it more. With 100m to go, Ovett was 0.1sec behind Coe, so for him to defeat Coe's last 100m of 12.1, he'd have had to run a last 100m inside 12.0! He never did that before or after in his career. Indeed, Coe's last 100m remains the fastest in any Championship final over 1500m.
lists Ovett's last 100m in the 1977 World Cup as 11.9.
It’s a great site that Said88 has created, and has lots of excellent and very accurate stats and data. Without checking the site itself, if he did list that as the time for the last 100m, then it is a mistake, and he will be aware of that. He knows the 11.9 alleged split (hand timed and taken by his coach, Harry Wilson, watching) was for the penultimate 100m from 1300 to 1400m, as Coevett stared. Close inspection of the race video and pausing at the marker with 200 to go and the line with 100m to go, shows that the split according to the race clock on screen was 12.0, but hey, whether it was just under or not, it is equally impressive.
I don’t think Ovett was going to run the last 200m in under 24! He made his burst with 200 to go, and wouldn’t have maintained that pace over the last 100m, imo, but if he hadn’t eased up a little in the last 40m or so, that 25.1 last 200m could certainly have been 24.5/24.6.
