Huge injury in a rugby accident. Says he's recovering well, but will he ever be near the same?

I hope so, but in an event where hundredths of a second count, that was a very serious injury....we shall see. He could have an imbalance in power output between the two legs which will result in slower times. Very stupid for him to play rugby. I dont get it.

Odds are against it.

he had his chance to continue his progression and break 43 and ruined it. he knows it.
if he can get back to form, it'll be a rare, wonderous thing.
i hope he does it but chances are very slim
this is why your high school coach doesn't want you playing other sports, going on spring break, breaking up with your girlfriend/boyfriend. just keep your head down and don't put yourself in a position to be distracted or injured.
my college coach about XC/ track season,
"if you have a beer every night, keep having a beer every night. if you have girlfriend, don't break up with her. if you don't have a girlfriend, don't get one until the season is over."
I agree with the other posters: It is very unlikely he will ever come back to 43.03 form. He messed that up with a poor decision and by taking his talent for granted.
That said, I am optimistic about his chances of being a solid sub-44 sprinter and thus in competition for medals at Olys and Worlds. Hopefully, he can also regain his 20-flat speed in the 200. The improvements in ACL surgery have been enormous in the past 10-15 years. We've seen athletes like Adrian Peterson, Blake Griffin and English Gardner come back with comparable explosiveness to their prior form.
Yeah, Hein is training at a high level. he's gonna be fine.

Your college coach is a real loser. Of that there is no doubt.
Rugby injury or not, there was slim to no chance he would ever run 43.03 again anyway. That's a once-in-a-lifetime type race.
You're never the same on a reconstructed ACL. Most cases progress to OA.

Tell this to Devon Allen. x2 even.

whatever you say.
if you think mick byrne is a loser
IF Mick Byrne tries to control his athlete’s relationships as you have stated, then he is a loser.

Just an overall stupid comment here^^
He get back to 44 seconds but the US will dominate the 400 for the next 10 years.

Obviously you must be one of the sheep...I would never stand for a coach like that and Imcan damn well assure you he would have wanted me to run for him in terms of results. However, we would have clashed if he is that controlling and obtuse.
I will do what I want. I would never tell Byrne not to get a divorce during the season, or not to break up with a girlfriend, and he would damn well never tell me what to do regarding a relationship. How stupid and sheeplike are you?

He couldn't get out of the semi's at last year's WC after a 5th place at Rio. We'll see what happens next year for the WC.

Gee whiz, you’re dense. I’m no fan of Byrne, but what he said is really standard advice from coaches to athletes. All he’s saying is, if your routine is working, don’t change it. Consistency makes a successful athlete. Only a moron would interpret that as “controlling” athletes. It should be obvious that he isn’t actually intervening in their personal lives.

Then Byrne should STFU. He is not that bright, and neither are you. Many runners run better after breaking up with a girl. You are obviously an idiot to assume that Byrne does not mean what he says,. Perhaps Byrne and you are so stupid that neither one of you recognize that innovation can breed improvement, not being a slave to the status quo, chugging down beers and being obsequious to Byrne or a girlfriend. Grow a pair imbecile.
wow, you really won't let it go. calm down kid, man, the volatility isn't helping anything. Have a conversation and don't get defensive.
Like @Ytr wrote, changing your routine is generally bad. Key word is, generally. of course there are exceptions, but you're fooling yourself if you don't recognize that stability will help. Just watch a 1 year-old not get to nap at naptime and tell me otherwise. ha
If you can convince 18, 19, 20 year old kids going to college (a place with basically no rules or supervision) to keep a consistency in their lives and keep things stable, then they will probably have less things to worry about.
Imagine an 18-yr-old freshman with a million new distractions going on in their life and they are trying to get good grades, makes friends and adapt socially, compete and train at a super high level and may be racing against veteran 23 years olds who are seasoned and have figured out what works for them. Any little thing you can do will help. I was a kid at the starting line against grown men and i was sorta freaked out, so trusting my routine or training or whatever, helped me and my teammates.
we know you disagree, so no need for you to tell us again. only you know what worked for you in college D1 track and XC, so it's cool to know you figured it all out and maximized your talent by being innovative. thanks.
