Pittsburgh. Don't knock it till you've tried it.
Pittsburgh. Don't knock it till you've tried it.
I mean in terms of training grounds it would have to be Boulder Co, Flagstaff Az, or Portland Or. No other cities regularly produce world class athletes. All three do have similarities though being moderate climate all year round. Large enough that housing is not too difficult to find, and miles of trails/dirt roads to crush training on.
The real question is what city has the hottest runner chicks?

Is the Montour Trail still nice for running? I did the IKEA half marathon on it years ago and had a good time.

Wow one place to run in the entire city sounds amazing.
Yeah except that one place is pretty awesome for runners.

Come on man!!!
These cities don't produce world class athletes. The athletes move there to train, they were world class when they got there for the most part. They would be world class if they lived in any city USA.

Galen Rupp grew up in Portland. Emma Coburn grew up in Boulder.
I am pretty sure that Coburn grew up in Crested Butte.

I've tried it, and I'm definitely knocking it. Horrible place over all subjects, running or otherwise.
Lived in San Diego for the past 13 yrs. I don't know if it's the best running city in the US but it's pretty damn good. Run all year with no worries and it doesn't get unbearably hot in the summer especially if you run near the coast.

No, Emma is from Crested Butte. Yes, Galen grew up playing soccer in Portland. Not sure that growing up in Portland is the reason he is a world class runner.
Deena Kastor was born in Waltham ,Ma, must be a great running city right?
I'd say Salt Lake City would have to be high on the list. Some of the perks:
summers in the mountains on the hundreds of miles of easily accessible trails; all weather track in basically each neighborhood that's open year round; 20 miles of paved trail in the valley (~4500ft) perfect for tempos; 421m indoor track accessible to the public 7 days a week; and obviously altitude.
Some of the negatives:
Putting up with the mormons- bad people- entitled- b!tchy- cheap- untrustworthy- they spend thousands of dollars to send their kids on these trips to preach their bastardized version of Christianity, but are complete @$$holes to the person standing right next to them. It's really weird, and I would have never guessed this would be an issue.
Bad drivers- don't even attempt at running in neighborhoods, let alone a somewhat busy road. You're just asking for death or injury.
Salt Lake City sucks.
Seriously, no one come here. There's nothing good to see. Nothing.
No love for San Hoser?

Went for a great long run in Frick Park when I was there. Not sure where else there is to run.
Boston easily in the top 3. Huge running vibe everywhere in the city. It played a major role in the running boom with the likes of Rogers, Salazar, Joan Benoit-Samuelson and now with Shalane. Boston Marathon, too.

I'd put San Francisco pretty high on the list (and before anyone complains about the cost of living, I thought all LRers made $250k or more...)
-great weather: never too hot, never too cold
-excellent trails across the bridge in Marin
-decent places to run in the city: GG Park, Embarcadero Kezar, Lake Merced...
-fairly deep local pool of fast people (sub-elites, I guess)
-couple of iconic races (Bay to Breakers, Dipsea)
