Sure thing, idiot. Nuguse just showed up and ran 4:06.

So you define great coaches as those who have runners that improve nearly 10 seconds the first year that one their runners is under a different coach? That sounds like the definition of an average coach. I wonder how fast he would have run under Reed Brown’s coach or Sam Worley’s coach. I have a feeling that he would have run 4 flat last year. Nobody is insulting his HS coach, but you can’t be on the kid’s bandwagon as an untapped talent and future great and say that his HS coach was great. Those two things are contradictory. He clearly got to 4:06 without doing a great deal in HS because he just flew by Grant Fisher in the DMR who had a great HS coach who got him under 4 minutes. Resorting to name calling in response to reasoned analysis does not further the discussion.
Was thinking the same thing. What did the high school coach "get"?
----- Apparently how to get a kid with full ride potential no money at all

You do realize some people are this talented, no?
Such a dick comment. You don't know his coach, yet want to pan his moment in the sun.
A one year growth from high school to college is like dog years. You don't have to do do anything to improve in high school except stay fit and uninjured and learn how to race and train. And retain interest and enjoyment.
Sounds like his high school coach did a fine job. He got into the school he wanted and he's a good racer.

In point of historical fact, it's not the way it happened with this kid.
I was his high school coach and I posted on the other thread about him as well, because I don't hide behind usernames. Bottom line is that Yared is an incredible kid and I am not at all surprised by his success this year. As I said in the other post, Yared's parents are both naturalized refugees from Ethiopia (came to the US in the 80s) and their family is a model of what the "American Dream" means. They work hard, take care of their kids, and stress education above all else. He was recruited by several schools and loved the culture that Coach Carlson is building at ND.
Feel free to knock my coaching as much as you want; but lay off the kid and the racist insinuations that he is older (it can't just be that he is talented, coachable, and works hard right..?)
any videos of the DMR?
Good for you coach Holman. Anyone who can coach a kid to 4:06 knows at least a little something about running. Since when did that become “average” for high school? It still puts him as one of the best milers in the nation.

What a brave run by Gourley....
It is surprising that these guys qualified when you look their PRs. It is absolutely amazing that they finished second. Something magical happens in relays. Athletes seem to rise to another level when they are part of a team.
