How can a 17yo (no running experience) get to a sub 15min from debut 20min 5k?

Also,

--You have to be mentally tough

--When I started I had coaches/teammates look at me my like I was delusional (some even straight up told me I was) when I told them how fast I think I can run/ wanna run.

--But I responded back with stories of other athletes who have done what I was trying to do (go from Hobbyjogger elite to legit fast)

--Even I doubted myself alot, it took me a long time to develop the skills to negotiate around that doubt and push it aside

--Never had a break through but I slowly kept improving even when I was sick and injured. I used that as fuel for my fire. If I can keep improving chronically overtrained/sick/injured what can I do when I put it all together?

LOL. Running 20 min 5k at your age with no training is not uncommon. I could have pulled that off at your age. Sub 15 though puts you in ballplayer territory. Take one step at a time.

I will probably just add random things that I have learned over the years when they come to mind. I think to often in this sport people like to just assume what you run off of zero experience defines your level of talent and then disregard your ability to improve and grow.

But I have always believed that for the most part (might not fully apply to sprints) that talent is like genius. Genius for most is just the culmination of work that know one has seen you put in(reading instead of watching TV, Learning for no other reason than wanting to know). Talent is pretty much the same, it might keep you from becoming a world beater but no reason that you cannot become damn good. If you think about how much top tier US highschoolers train before they specialize vs other kids with less active backgrounds e.g.) elementary school (60min gym class everyday) + afterschool sports 3-7 days a week for several hours + maybe family outings hiking/biking/kicking around a soccer ball etc. --> JuniorHigh more or less the same maybe even add in an extra Total Body Fitness/Workout class 2-3 days/week for 60-80min as an optional course + an hour of lunch break to play sports--> HighSchool (Boom ~8-10yrs later, 10-20hrs physical conditioning a week consistently, some motivation and good work ethic and you have a talent)
