You read that correctly.
And I thought Rio 2016 was the post pansy-@$$ race ever.
How bad can this get? I bet we'll see 4:10 in the next year.
The WRs for fastest times are unbeatable, so let's try to beat the records for slowest times.

Watch Blankenship's interview. He explains it.
Too bad Centro wasn't there

Let Jamin think he could have been within 5 seconds of the finishers. It's funnier that way
Well, they closed in 1:47. Sooo...

Why?
It was like another 800 meter final.
Yes, but the not wanting to lead and set it up for everyone else only worked for one competitor. There must have been runners in that race who knew they had NO chance when the pace was so slow. Better, surely, to try more aggressive tactics, run a much faster pace even if you think you have a 95% chance of failure?
Like Iguider

There was already a thread about this hours before you posted yours. Why double dip? Not getting enough attention from the wife?
Caster could have won this one.
that's how championship races go in events long enough to become tactical. Sometimes titles are more important than times. I'd rather win a world Championship because we walked the first half of the race and I was able to race smart and be faster in the end than lose because I don't want some kid on the internet to call me a pansy. Medals = money

At an international level??? No one would be that incapable of different racing strategies.
When's the last time a men's championship race time was slower than the world lead for the women's?
Dibaba 3:56, Terefa 3:58
I agree. So ridiculous 42 second 200m from 200m to 400m. There are usually only 3 legit guys that can win at most. Would be nice if a couple guys would get the balls to take the pace and make it respectable. All winning times should be thrown out if slower than 4 minute mile pace which would be about 3:43
It's actually smarter for the slower guys to hang back -- running a respectable time means nothing. It's all about place.
If everyone runs slow from the gun, fastest runners win, slower runners lose.
If everyone runs slow from the gun, all runners in pack, some runners, get boxed, some runners fall, some slow runners kick well, etc. Slow pace creates volatility. Volatility favors runners who have no shot.
The smartest way, strategically, is for the faster runners to run out from the gun, this almost guarantees them a medal. But.. what it does not guarantee a win. Any runner who can run fast enough to know he can medal in a fast race, is coming into the race thinking he can win, and is therefore disincentivized.
So, where does this bring us?
Best scenario for faster races -- a guy who knows he is not a gold contender, but is a medal contender. Or, a guy who is a gold contender and his only shot is to not allow it to come to a kicker's race.
But either way -- it should never be slower runners pushing the pace.
I always said, if you run it slowly enough, Usain Bolt could win the Olympic Marathon.

It was a race. While it is entertaining to the crowd, the athlete's job is to win, not to make you happy.
blah blah, yes I know if you find it boring they won't attract sponsorship, and the sport will die.
Its already on its last legs. They're thinking of their medals, not your tickets. Just win baby.
