He won FL and was AA a few times at Iowa State, I'm not sure that gives him any sort of insight into the big picture. He did not have a long post-collegiate career. There are many great athletes who become average coaches, with flaws and blind spots like all the rest of us.
I think it's worth noting here that both Ihmels' teams at Iowa State and especially at Boise State have had real problems with eating disorders. A failure to address those issues, and to allow athletes to continue running in spite of an obvious problem, does not demonstrate a good grasp of the long-term picture.
