Because Canada gained a measure of independence in 1946 and then completed it in the early 80s

Quebec has long had an independence movement, and they finally allowed a pure French speaking team from the Quebec nation to compete alone this time. That was why the US was able to be Canada in women's hockey - most of the good players north of the border are from Quebec.

Ireland has a separate team because it has a separate country. Just like Iceland.

Well, it's more about federations and committees. England, Scotland, Wales, and North Ireland all have separate soccer
federations. So they can represent themselves in the world cup, federations cups, etc. However, England is the only one with
its own Olympic committee, so scotland, wales, and north ireland play under that, and they all play as the team of great Britain in the Olympics.
With that being said, I imagine that Quebec has its own olympic committee, so they can represent themselves in the olympics. But they don't have their own soccer federation, so they fall under Canada's soccer federation.
You know Native Americans would be able to do the same thing here, since their territory is sovereign territory. If they had an Olympic committee and competing athletes, they would be able to represent themselves in the olympics.

Okay, cool. I don't follow the winter olympics, so I was just taking what the poster was talking about as facts. that is why I gave that explanation on olympic committees, which is true.
