I have a 5k coming up that I'd like to use as a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race 10k in July so I want to run hard. Two weeks after the 5k I want to see how fast I can run in a 10k race before taking a week or two off and then gearing back up for summer. My best guess right now is to do a hard interval workout a week before the 5k then have a short easy week. After the 5k have a normal week and include a long run before doing another interval workout a week out from the 10k and then toning it down again.
I'm 34 & definitely a recreational runner on low mileage (anywhere from 2-6 mile runs) mixed with swimming every other day. I was a high mileage injury prone high schooler so I'm pretty just happy to see my times dropping while I stay healthy. Sub-19 and sub-40 are my goals this year & with 11:44 3200 & 25:09 4-mile I think I'm already getting close. I know my long run is only race distance right now but I'll be building that up going into summer as well. Mainly I'd love some input from more knowledgeable/accomplished runners as to whether I'm on the right track with the taper. Thanks!
