1:52 bar any absurdities.
If his coach knows what he’s doing he’ll send him through 500 in 68 or so and have him “attack” the last 300. He’s run 62, so 68 should be comfortable but still allow him to get a strong start. Focusing on the last 300 will help him stay aggressive and approach his kick like a 400 runner. Even if he chokes and runs a 50 he’ll at least be under 2:00.
It’s too early for him to run anything that fast, let alone off of 400m training and basically on his own.
I'll go with a 1:53...just because I feel like he'll go out too fast and then burn out (1:53 is still good, but I just feel like he's going to burn out).
1:55

too slow. I ran faster than that indoors and was slower than him over 400. (46) I didn't follow a planned time. He will run with the crowd, not with the time, and find himself working the last 150.
He can't help but finish faster than 1:53. He'll race it. I suspect he'll be in a mid range group, so will be racing, not time trialling it.

Is he Obea Moore? In which case sub 1:50.
Or more like Jeremy Wariner? 1:53.
No doubt this guy is more akin to Obea Moore.
Not only was he primarily an 800 runner a few years back, but his training is also heavily strength and endurance based.
Here’s one of his workout from about a year ago for example. Hill training...
Here’s one of his 400m races from 2016...
Cooper’s splits were roughly 22.4 and 23.2 for a 45.6. That’s great strength for a 400 runner. I’m sure it’ll translate to the 800.

Hill training...?
That doesn't look like the kind of endurance running hill training I'm familiar with personally. Looks like a power oriented workout.
Anyway I think the kid will run a bit under 1:55 unless he's been training for it.

He might actually go out too slow, being spooked by the "distance.
I once had a 100/200/400 runner run an 800. He was afraid to go with the kids pacing him (it was a HS dual meet),
went out in like 65 and ran 2:01. He was 49.xx 400 guy.
1:57.93 in prelim
Haha. I thought this was a joke, but he really did it.

There was a 10.8/47 guy in my league in hs, he ran 1:52 in the 800, so I'm surprised cooper ran this "slow." Of course, this is also his first crack at it, maybe he will do a couple more for training and improve on that.
I have no doubt he could run a very fast time if he trained for the 800 and I also doubt he is doing much 800m specific training.

I saw that, but my assumption was that he would scratch the finals, since he is just doing it for training and as a check mark. Did/is he running the finals?
What happened to this guy? Two years ago he was supposed to be our next great 400m runner, now he's toying with the 800? Did he stagnate big time in the 100/200/400?
All the best to the kid, a huge talent for sure.

You tell us. As a soph he ran 20.51 list leader and 45.86 behind a couple of upper classmen.
Bump. When's the final?

DNF. Anybody know what happened?
Oh and to the guy talking about his progression... talent doesn’t just disappear. He held up really well last year and although he didn’t PR he got handled most of his competition well enough. Even on his worst day this kid is still a D1/low tier pro talent.
