In a surprising mid-season move, Mario Sategna is no longer the track coach at Texas. Tonja Buford-Bailey will take over as the interim head coach. Texas has a new athletic director in Chris Del Conte (started in December and came from TCU) but replacing Sategna mid-season is a surprise, even with Sategna's stint at Texas not having been a smooth one. In 2016 Sategna took a leave of absence and was under an ethics investigation but returned in January of last year as coach. "I had some things personally going on in my life that I needed to address, and now I'm ready to get back to work. I'm extremely thankful for the support I received from so many people, starting with Mike (Perrin) and Chris (Plonsky)," he said at the time to Texassports.com.
Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesmen has the details on Sategna's departure saying "Thursday’s news came as a surprise. Just on Monday, the track program promoted a video of Sategna on its Twitter account."
