Just had double open inguinal hernia surgery a week ago. Having had some other surgeries I had a better idea what to expect for pain and recovery. Only took Tramadol for a few days, I am a believer in reducing overall stress and I have proven to myself I can limit my painkillers as needed. Taking alternate Tylenol and ibuprofen as needed now. Used Duclolax and Metamucil to offset the constipation which you really don't want.
Plan to start walking tomorrow and do as much as I feel comfortable in doing. I don't see any need to rush the recovery and with the open surgery I have two nice 4" or so incisions. Doc says not to worry about dislodging anything like the mesh.
I slept with a pillow under my knees which helped reduce the pull in the groin area. And speaking of that, and my surgeon said to expect it. I had bruising and swelling of the boys and their clubhouse if you know what I mean. Rather tender too and some mild testicular pain. Wearing supportive underwear helps. Let's just say having big balls is highly and completely overrated.
I had put this off for a long time, glad to be getting it behind me. I can see cataract surgery coming up soon, hope that is it for a while.
Oh, doc said I was an excellent patient to operate on, obese people with a lot of belly fat are difficult plus being in shape helps with recovery. I daresay we runners also understand pain and can listen to out bodies better and not go into a panic with some odd discomfort.
Good luck to anyone going through this. I would be glad to answer any questions you might have as well.
