Why do they not have an xc or track team?
They are at high altitude and are a D1 school, so I would assume they could grab some decent local talent and with mediocre coaching could compete well at sea level.
Why no team?

Why no team?
That is weird
Probably some combo of title IX restrictions, not wanting to spend money on a program and actually focusing on the real purpose of a university - academics
Small private school with its primary athletic focus on hockey. Also good in lacrosse and skiing. Won national championships in all the past three years.
Good question. A program for both men and women shouldn’t be hard to start. Only detriment I see is the lack of nearby training grounds. Hills would require a drive and no good dirt paths in that part of Denver.
Not saying they could compete with CU or CSU, but they could pull in their share of recruits.
It would be tough for them to pull in serious dedicated runners.
And what would be the point? They would be the worst college team in the state
Worse than Metro, Northern Colorado, Mesa, Regis or Colorado Christian?
Nah.
DU has got money, solid academics, and location. They draw students from everywhere.
Won’t be able to compete with Boulder or Fort Collins, and likely not Mines or Adams St, but they could easily scratch out a niche.

To say they would likely not compete with Adams and Mines is a hilarious understatement.
They would not be as good as metro, UNC, or Mesa. Sure, maybe they could flop around in the back with Regis and Colorado Christian.
Are you a DU student? I dont think the school culture/vibe, nor the training areas would facilitate a competitive cross team. You've only got Wash Park and Highline trail nearby for serious training. Washington is crowded all the time, good luck.
In the end i think it would be cool if they got a team, it's just my opinion that they would be a laughing stock for a long time
Denver is NOT "at high altitude." It's basically a highly polluted, traffic city where you down craft beers, run on concrete bike paths by stinky factories and nearly vomit from the smell during the work week, and then drive 5 hours to get to ski resorts a few times a season.
Has DU ever had a track or xc team? Or at least in the past 30 or 40 years?
As mentioned earlier their ski team has been very competitive. They've gained and lost their teams a few times over the years. And as far as not being a high altitude city without the infrastructure (you have to laugh at the bitter soul who hates the city and everything about it--hey note, go back to Pennsyltucky if you don't like it), skiing is 1.5 to 2 hours away but they still make it happen.
Anyway, the school has a lot of money and could no doubt fund some teams. And if money is an issue, XC would be a good start. And it's a program that could recruit nationally or internationally (as the ski team).
DU has a great Bartending, Beauty, Welding, Web Design, and Security Guard program. Immediate jobs!

They had an xc team in the late 90's/early 2000's
