I personally have trouble with progressions as I never start out at the right pace and either increase my pace too fast or just somehow mess it up (the hills in my area make it too hard to judge effort).
Is it sufficient to do only one of these for a whole base training phase or should you rotate doing progressions and fartleks?
Do you find structured (e.g. 10 x 3 min on, 90 seconds off) or unstructured fartleks more effective?
Which of these schedules do you think is more conducive for improvement in a high school 1600 runner in winter base phase?

Or should I do something like use this as a three week cycle? It's just that I hear that you should get in a tempo and hills every week, but I also hear fartleks and progressions are important as well and I don't know how to fit it all in in a week. I know you shouldn't do the same in week in and week out, so could someone give me a basic schedule that includes all of these workouts?
Sorry for all of the questions, I am self-coached and feel I need some more variety in my training (want sub 4:20 this year, 4:33 PR). I'm a senior. Looking forward to the discussions on specific types of work and their merits.
P.S. I do include strides, just didn't feel like typing that it 60 times
