Hes overestimating, and I think he knows that. But fact is Jakob is in insane form. Doubt anyone here is going to realise how fast he are until he races this year. Hes running intervals together with his brothers Henrik and Filip, 3.31 and 3.32 runners with a fifht in the olympics, bronze in the WC and several medals in the European Championship. What that kid is going to run this year will make Hunter and other current American prospects look like nothing.

Optimistic, very optimistic. Sub 60 @ 17, faster than Moen (who does Renato's training). My guess with Jakob is that he will peak at about 19, like Ryun etc.

Bold move to put an “etc” after citing only 1 example.
What others did you have in mind? Fernandez, Verzbicas, ??? Any European examples? (Please note that I am not being disagreeable; I am genuinely curious)

Like his brothers right? What you don't understand is that their training regime consist of massive amounts of treshold intervals, always testing with a lactate meter. This aint a kid who trains like Webb and is going to burn out. He might not run sub 3.30 or be worlds best, but he will definitely have a long career (unless injuries and similar).
He is definitely exaggerating and the claims are based on lactate thresholds and VO2 max tests which have at best low correlation with results at the elite level. His actual race times do not indicate he can run 59:48, but he definitely has a shot at it in a few years if he pursues it. I assume you're talking about this:

Why is his brother Henrik on the leaked Fancy Bears Atypical ABP results list???

Surely dad Ingebrigtsen isn't doping up his 16 year old son, who just so happens to hold the world record for his age over the mile? What sort of family would do such a thing? (Harrisons, Dibabas, Schlecks, Salazars)
The good news is that teenagers don't take drugs.

Do I really need to give more examples? Over some thirty plus years in the sport I have seen half a dozen examples annually in my area alone, virtually all fizzled out. And that isn't including historical examples.
1500m PERFORMANCE PLACE DATE
2017 3:39.92 Stockholm (Olympiastadion) 18 JUN
2016 3:42.44 Oslo (Bislett) 09 JUN
2015 3:48.37 Stockholm (Olympiastadion) 30 JUL
2014 4:05.49 Sandnes 20 SEP
So from 2014 to 2015 he improved by 17s, then 5.93s the next year, then 2.52s, what is the trend? He is slowing is annual gains, the law of diminishing returns. He is essentially professionally trained already, going for long stints at altitude, which brings you to a new level of fitness earlier. Basically at 18 he will be at the same stage as a standard elite western miler @ 24/25. I can see him improving just enough to say 3:37 in the next year or two, which would get him into big races that are won in 3:31 and so doing he could be dragged through to 3:33/34, after that it is all incremental.
His mile PR is more like 3:38.low, so his actual improvement last year was more like 4 seconds. Wouldn't surprise me to see him in the 3:35 range this year, and even small improvements after the age of 17 (how could you not expect that?) will put him in the mix for major titles. His brothers are already some of the best in the world (if not among the super-elite, although with Filip's medal that's arguable) and assuming he's the most talented of the 3 it's not hard to see him reaching well into the 3:20s. Besides didn't he front run an 8:26 steeple and 13:35 5k? For a 16-year-old those times are at least as impressive. He qualified for the WCs at the age of a high school sophomore (possibly junior) - when was the last time if ever an American distance runner did that?
Its alright to be critical, but you have to at least have a basic understanding of the sport and a willingness to actually read up before you assume based on stats alone.
Like the poster above me mention, his mile PR is better than his 1500m PR. And if you actually watched the DL you would know that he ran his 3.39 in the senior heat in Stockholm. He was obviously not good enough, and ran the race all by himself. Thats a 3.39 solo race. Far far better than his 3.42,44 with a rabbit.
Secondly, the rest of the year he didn't focus on running fast times in the 1500m, but focused on junior championships (international) and senior championships in Norway.
He ran the 13.35 with Sondre Moen leading most of the way, so not a front run. He did however comfortably drop Moen and could probably have gone at least 5 seconds faster. Steeple could also easily have been better if a faster race.

He tends to do that. Don't really think he is serious but people latch on to it when he says things like that. Mostly hes just talking about how insane Jakobs progression is, far beyond what he thought was possible at his age. Regarding the tests he actually said basically what you're saying, that he doesn't really care about the tests but about how he performe in a race. Though, it should be said that lactate treshold tests do have a correlation with results (depending on distance) FAR above that of VO2 max. He reportedly had an insane lactate treshold measurement
It's amazing that he is running such great times so young.
However the fact is he will get stuck at around 3:31 like his brothers. This kid isn't going to run 3:26.
The Kenyans couldn't care less about Jakob running 3:39 at 16 or whatever.
If he wants to win any medals like Fillip then he better work on his speed. Forget this half marathon ability nonsense.

High you mean.
i belive he will be better at the long distances. 3km and above is perfect, maybe too slow for 1500

That might be true about the 3:31, regarding speed is Filip fast enough to medal and Jakob isn't going to be any slower. It might be smarter to aim for the steeplechase though, less runners capable of running an 800 in 1.43-1.45 there..
Wow, a dad over exaggerating their kid's potential? Who would do such a thing???

Steeplechase would be a better aim for him I agree.
Jakob appears to have less of a kick than Fillip, even in junior races he has a less pronounced turn of speed and prefers to make it a long run for home. Fillip has a much better kick than Henrik also despite both being quality athletes. It is what won Fillip a bronze medal in London and the only way to medal these days.
Nobody is running 3:28 from the front for 3.75 laps like Hicham anymore...
The Lavar Ball of track and field?? Three sons, all very talented but some lack experience....will we be getting more hot takes from this man??
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
